About

“The quality of a map is also in part an aesthetic matter. Maps should have harmony within themselves. An ugly map, with crude colors, careless line work, and disagreeable, poorly arranged lettering may be intrinsically as accurate as a beautiful map, but it is less likely to inspire confidence.” John K. Wright

bd-MAP is

bd-MAP is primarily a technical manual, to the degree our work is technical work.

bd-MAP cultivates institutional memory, provides reminders for those who have forgotten, and pointers for those who are new. We are inspired by hard work, but realize that Sysiphus is not a good role model. We don’t want to re-push that boulder up the hill anymore than he did.

bd-MAP documents consistent form for our content, and shows the way to consistent, productive, and efficient work. It is our style manual, our playbook.

bd-MAP is not:

A daily newspaper. bd-MAP will evolve as fast as a map changes… or as fast as technology or policy changes.

Fashion or ephemera. Fashion changes daily. Infrastructure not so much.

What are “processes”?

“A series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.” “Modern” because they are in the present tense. “Architectural” because that’s what we do.
